About WebP
WebP is the current default for web images: small, well supported, alpha-capable. It's a good format, but its lossy mode is based on the VP8 video codec from 2008, which modern codecs comfortably beat.

AVIF is based on AV1 (2018) and represents roughly a decade of codec progress over WebP. It holds detail better at aggressive compression levels and handles gradients without banding.
