About WebP
WebP is Google's image format from 2010. It compresses photos ~25–35% smaller than JPG at similar quality and supports both lossless mode and transparency. Every modern browser saves images as WebP by default when the site serves them that way, which is why so many downloaded images land with an unfamiliar extension.
About JPG
JPG is the universal fallback. Every image editor, email client, print shop, and social platform accepts it without complaint. It's lossy and has no transparency, but for photographic content the compression trade-off is what people expect.
