Compress a video to any size in MB

Most compressors give you a slider and leave you guessing. Here you type the size you need in MB. The tool works out the bitrate from your video's length, picks the sharpest picture that budget can carry, and checks the finished file. Sending it as an attachment? See how to compress a video for email.

What quality to expect at each size

Whether you need to compress a video to 5 MB, 10 MB, 25 MB, 50 MB or 100 MB, the result depends on how long the video is. This table shows the picture size the tool starts from for a typical 1080p video. Calm footage often looks better than these numbers suggest, and the page shows its estimate for your own video.

Private, because nothing is uploaded

Online video compressors usually send your file to a server, which means a long upload and a copy of your video on someone else's computer. This one runs in your browser, on your graphics chip where possible. The video is read in small pieces rather than loaded into memory, so large files work too.

Your browser re-encodes the video and checks the finished size, with another pass if it's needed.

  4. 4

    Preview and download

Watch the result, see how much you saved, and save the MP4.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reduce a video's file size?
Drop the video on this page, pick Balanced or type an exact size in MB, and press Compress video. The page shows the expected result before you start, and you can preview the video before you download it.
Can I compress a video to an exact size?
Yes. Choose Exact size and type a number of megabytes. The tool works out the settings from your video's length, checks the finished file, and runs a second pass if needed so the result lands under your target.
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. Your browser compresses the video on your own device, so it never leaves your computer or phone, and there's no upload wait.
Will it lose quality?
All compression gives up some detail. Balanced is usually hard to tell from the original on a phone or laptop. Very small targets for long videos look soft, so the tool lowers the picture size to keep them clean, and it warns you when the result will look rough.
How long does it take?
In Chrome, Edge and Safari your graphics chip does the work, which is usually faster than watching the video. Long videos test a few short samples first, so the size is right on the first full pass. It needs a current browser, ideally Chrome or Edge on a computer.
What do I get back?
An H.264 MP4 with AAC sound, which plays on nearly every phone, computer and website, even if you started with a MOV, MKV or WebM.
Does it keep multiple audio tracks?
Yes, if you want it to. When a video has more than one audio track, such as an OBS recording or a film with extra languages, a Keep all audio tracks box appears. Otherwise only the main track is kept, which leaves more of the size for the picture.
Is there a watermark?
No, on both the free and Pro plans.
Are there limits?
Free users can compress videos up to 10 minutes and 1 GB, 3 times a day as a guest or 5 with a free account. Pro removes the length, file size and daily limits.
Can it handle really large videos?
Yes, because the video is read in small pieces instead of being loaded into memory. With Pro there's no file size limit. For big results, Chrome and Edge can save straight to a file you choose. Very large videos can still take a long time and need free disk space.
