About PNG

PNG is lossless and universal, but for photographic content it's several times larger than it needs to be. Great for editing masters; overkill for shipping to a live site.

About AVIF

AVIF is a newer image format based on the AV1 video codec. It offers the strongest compression of any widely-supported image format today, with alpha transparency and HDR support. Chrome, Firefox, Safari 16+, and Edge all decode it natively.

Why convert PNG to AVIF?

Convert PNG → AVIF when you're publishing to the modern web and want the absolute smallest file at a given quality. Keep PNG when the destination requires lossless (print, further editing) or doesn't support AVIF.

What people use it for

  • Ship the smallest possible hero images and photos on a site
  • Cut CDN egress and improve Lighthouse / Core Web Vitals
  • Serve AVIF via <picture> with PNG/JPG fallbacks
  • Batch-convert a photo library for a fast-loading gallery (Pro)
  • Reduce mobile data usage for image-heavy pages

How it works

  1. 1

    Drop a .png file

Click the drop zone or drag any PNG file in. Files stay on your device.

  2. 2

    Adjust quality (optional)

Drag the quality slider. 90%+ is visually indistinguishable from the source; lower values shrink the file further.
