About JPG
JPG has been the default photo format since 1992. Its compression is well understood and universally supported, but it's also three decades old: no transparency, visible blocking at low bitrates, and far more bytes than a modern codec needs for the same picture.
About AVIF
AVIF wraps still images in the AV1 video codec. It handles gradients, skin tones, and noise far better than JPG at low bitrates, adds alpha transparency and HDR, and is decoded natively by Chrome, Firefox, Safari 16.4+, and Edge.
