Will it play automatically like a GIF?

On every major platform, yes. Twitter, Reddit, Discord, iMessage, Telegram, and modern browsers autoplay MP4s silently by default. The one edge case: raw email attachments — some mail clients still won't autoplay video, so a GIF is safer there.

The encoded file itself has no loop flag (that's a player-level setting). But when you embed a <video> tag with the `loop` attribute, or upload to a platform like Reddit that loops by default, it behaves exactly like the GIF did.

Is the conversion lossless?

No — H.264 is a lossy codec. In practice the quality loss is invisible for GIF sources because GIFs are already limited to 256 colors; H.264 gives them more color depth than they started with, not less.

Why is my browser slow while converting?
