Will the JPG be bigger or smaller than the AVIF?

Bigger, usually 2–4× larger for equivalent visual quality. AVIF's whole point is smaller files; converting back to JPG trades that back for universal compatibility.

Does JPG support transparency like AVIF does?

No. JPG has no alpha channel. If your AVIF has transparent regions, they'll be filled with white in the JPG. If you need transparency, convert to PNG instead.

Why don't older versions of Windows / Photoshop open AVIF?

AVIF decoding is expensive and only shipped in mainstream OS libraries in 2022–2023. Anything older doesn't understand the format at all — hence the constant need to convert back to JPG when handing files across environments.

About AVIF

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is the newest mainstream image codec. It's based on the AV1 video codec and typically produces files 40–50% smaller than a comparable JPG at the same visual quality. It's why sites like Netflix, Cloudflare, and modern CDNs serve AVIF whenever the browser supports it. The problem: any older tool, plugin, or upload form that predates 2022 will treat an .avif file as garbage.
