Is PNG really lossless compared to the original HEIC?

PNG itself is lossless — it stores every pixel exactly. But HEIC is a lossy compressed format to begin with, so a HEIC → PNG conversion is 'lossless from this point forward'. You're not losing any additional quality, but you're not recovering detail the HEIC already discarded either.

Will the PNG be bigger than the original HEIC?

Almost always, yes — usually 3–8× larger. That's the price of a lossless, universally-readable format. If file size matters more than editability, convert to JPG instead.

What happens to EXIF, GPS location, and Live Photo data?

The visible image is converted. Camera metadata (EXIF, GPS) is dropped by the decoder for privacy — if you want to keep it, tell us in feedback and we'll add a toggle. Live Photo motion is not preserved; only the still frame is converted.

Does it work on iPhone Safari?

Yes, but Safari already opens HEIC natively, so you can often skip conversion entirely. Convert to PNG when you need to share the file off-device with someone who isn't on Apple hardware.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The HEIC decoder is compiled to WebAssembly and runs in your browser tab. Your photos never leave your device — you can check the Network tab in DevTools to verify.

About HEIC

HEIC (High-Efficiency Image Container) is the format iPhones and iPads have used by default since iOS 11. It stores photos with the HEVC codec, which gives roughly half the file size of a JPG at similar quality. The catch: outside Apple's own apps, HEIC is still a second-class citizen. Windows, Android, most CMSes, most editors, and every browser except Safari will refuse to open a raw .heic file.

It supports full 8-bit transparency and never re-compresses your pixels, which is why designers, developers, and anyone editing screenshots reach for it first. The tradeoff is file size — PNGs of photos are large.

Frequently asked questions

Because HEVC — the codec HEIC wraps — is patent-encumbered. Microsoft ships the extension separately (and charges $0.99), Chrome and Firefox refuse to bundle it at all, and most upload forms still validate against the older JPG/PNG list. Converting to PNG bypasses all of that.
