About PNG
PNG is a lossless raster format with full alpha transparency. It stores every pixel exactly, which is perfect for screenshots, UI mockups, and logos — and overkill for photos, which end up several times larger than they need to be.
About JPG
JPG (JPEG) is the workhorse photo format of the web. It uses lossy DCT compression tuned for natural images, which means big file-size savings with a quality tradeoff you can dial in. It has no transparency, so any transparent pixels have to be flattened to a background color first.
Why convert PNG to JPG?
Convert PNG → JPG when the file is a photo or photo-like screenshot and file size matters — email attachments, web pages, CMS uploads with strict limits, or bulk archives. Keep PNG when you need transparency or pixel-perfect edits.
What people use it for
- Shrink a bloated PNG photo before emailing or uploading it
- Meet a CMS or forum size limit that rejects the original PNG
- Batch-compress a folder of PNG exports for the web (Pro)
- Convert PNG screenshots to JPG for lighter documentation
- Prepare product photos for a marketplace that prefers JPG
