About GIF

GIF dates to 1987 and is limited to a 256-colour palette per frame with binary transparency: a pixel is either fully opaque or fully clear, which is why GIF logos often show jagged fringes on coloured backgrounds. Its one superpower is animation.

About PNG

PNG is lossless, supports 24-bit colour plus a full alpha channel, and is read by literally everything. For static graphics, icons, and screenshots it's the format that gives you clean edges and no palette artefacts.

Why convert GIF to PNG?

Convert GIF → PNG whenever the animation doesn't matter and the quality does: logos, diagrams, screenshots, and sprite frames all look better and composite more cleanly as PNG.

What people use it for

  • Get a clean still frame out of an animated GIF
  • Replace a jagged-edged GIF logo with a smooth-alpha PNG
  • Prepare a GIF graphic for print or further editing
  • Fix a GIF that shows white fringing over a dark background
  • Standardise legacy GIF assets on PNG (Pro batch)

How it works

  1. 1

    Drop a .gif file

Click the drop zone or drag any GIF file in. Files stay on your device.

  2. 2

    Adjust quality (optional)

PNG is lossless, so there's no quality slider — every pixel of the decoded image is preserved.

  3. 3

    Click Convert to PNG

The conversion runs in your browser. When it's done, click Download.

Only the first frame is converted — PNG is a still format. If you want to keep motion, use our Video to GIF tool in reverse or convert the GIF to MP4 instead.
