About BMP
BMP (Bitmap) is Microsoft's uncompressed image format from the Windows 3.0 era. Every pixel is stored in full with no compression, which makes files enormous — a 4K bitmap is 30+ MB. Modern software rarely produces BMPs, but they still turn up from old scanners, legacy Windows apps, and screenshot utilities.
About PNG
PNG is the lossless format built to replace BMP and GIF. It stores every pixel exactly (just like BMP) but with real compression, so files are dramatically smaller. It's universally supported and adds alpha transparency, which BMP mostly lacks.
