The common, fixable ones: an index (moov atom) sitting at the end of the file so nothing seeks, broken or non-monotonic timestamps that cause 0:00 durations and stutter, corrupt packets in the middle of a recording, a damaged audio track that stops the whole file from opening, and containers that browsers and editors refuse to import.

If a recording was cut off before the index was ever written — the classic “moov atom not found” file — there is no map of where the frames are. Nothing running locally can reliably reconstruct that without a healthy reference recording made by the same camera at the same settings. Will repairing lose quality?

Usually not. The first three passes are lossless: your existing video and audio streams are copied byte-for-byte into a rebuilt container. Only the final fallback re-encodes, and it is only used when nothing else produces a playable file.

Why does my video play but show 0:00 or refuse to scrub?

The duration and timestamp fields in the header are wrong, usually after a crash, a dropped SD card, or a recorder that never got to finalise the file. Regenerating presentation timestamps and rewriting the container header fixes it without touching the picture.

My video has green or garbled frames — can that be repaired?

Partly. Green blocks and smearing mean the compressed bitstream itself is damaged, not just the container. The repair drops the corrupt packets so the rest plays cleanly, but the destroyed frames themselves cannot be invented back.
