How does it decide what is silence?

It measures loudness (RMS in dBFS) in 20 ms frames. Any stretch quieter than your threshold and longer than the minimum gap is treated as silence and cut out.

What threshold should I use?

‒45 dB is a good starting point for a clean voice recording. Raise it toward ‒30 dB if room noise or hiss is keeping the gaps in; lower it toward ‒60 dB if quiet words are being clipped.

Why is there a padding setting?

Cutting exactly at the edge of speech sounds abrupt and can clip breaths and consonants. Padding keeps a fraction of a second of silence around every kept segment so the result still sounds natural.

Can I only trim the beginning and end?

Yes. Switch “What to cut” to “Only start & end” and the tool keeps everything between the first and last sound, removing only the dead air at the edges.

Which formats can I open?
