Compress a 3D Gaussian Splat

Compress 3D Gaussian Splatting .ply captures to Niantic SPZ or PlayCanvas SOG — up to ~10× smaller, visually near-identical, 100% in-browser.

What people use it for

  • Shrink a 500 MB Polycam or Postshot .ply capture down to a web-friendly .spz.
  • Convert Gaussian Splats to SOG for streaming inside a PlayCanvas or three.js viewer.
  • Prepare splats for embedding on a portfolio, product page, or real-estate listing.
  • Send a scene to a client without a WeTransfer-sized upload.
  • Re-encode an .spz file to .sog (or the other way around) for a different viewer.
  • Batch-compress a folder of captures before archiving them.

If you have been searching for a 3D Gaussian Splatting compressor, a PLY to SPZ converter, or a way to compress a .ply splat without uploading it to a stranger's server, this is the tool. It takes raw 3D Gaussian Splatting captures — the kind exported by Polycam, Postshot, Nerfstudio, gsplat, Luma, Scaniverse, or the original INRIA reference implementation — and rewrites them as compact SPZ or SOG files.

SPZ is Niantic's open splat container: a single binary file roughly ten times smaller than the source PLY, supported by most modern splat viewers. SOG (PlayCanvas Super-Split Optimized Gaussians) uses WebP-quantized textures and is optimized for progressive streaming on the web, which makes it ideal for embedding a scene on a product page, portfolio, or real-estate listing. Both formats are lossy, but the visual difference is essentially invisible next to the raw capture.

Everything happens in your browser via WebAssembly, so you can safely compress confidential captures, client scans, or unreleased scenes — the file never leaves your device. There is no upload, no queue, no signup, and no watermark.

How it works

  1. 1

    Drop your splat

Add a .ply, .spz, or .sog file. Pro users can queue several at once.

  2. 2

    Pick an output format

Choose SPZ for maximum compatibility or SOG for web-native streaming.

  3. 3

    Download the compressed file

The reduced splat is delivered as a direct download — no server round-trip.

Frequently asked questions

Gaussian Splatting is a modern rendering technique that represents a scene as millions of tiny colored gaussians instead of a mesh. Raw .ply splats are huge — often hundreds of megabytes — which is why compressed formats like SPZ and SOG exist.
