How much smaller is WOFF2 compared to TTF?

WOFF2 typically shrinks a TTF by 25–50% with zero visual difference, because it's the same font data wrapped in Brotli compression. Modern browsers have supported it for years, so there's no reason to serve TTF or WOFF for web use anymore.

What does 'subsetting' do?

Subsetting drops every glyph your site doesn't actually render. If your homepage headline only uses Latin letters, numbers, and basic punctuation, you can throw away the 3,000 Chinese/Cyrillic/symbol glyphs that ship with most Google Fonts and cut the file from 300 KB to 30 KB.

Which subset preset should I pick?

Latin basic for English-only sites, Latin extended if you need Nordic (æ, ø, å), German (ä, ö, ü), French accents, or the €/£ symbols. Pick Custom and type in your logo text if you only render one fixed word.

Is my font uploaded to a server?

No. The font file is parsed, subset, and re-encoded entirely in your browser using WebAssembly. Nothing leaves your machine — safe for commercial and licensed fonts.

Can I subset a commercial or paid font?

Technically yes — the tool works on any TTF/OTF file. Legally, check the license: some foundries allow web use and self-hosting, others require a separate web license. Google Fonts, Adobe Fonts trial downloads, and open-source fonts (SIL OFL) are all fair game.

Why is my WOFF2 output almost the same size as the input?

The input was probably already a WOFF2 or an already-compressed WOFF. WOFF2 uses Brotli, so re-compressing it can't shrink it further — but subsetting still will, dramatically.

Does this preserve hinting and OpenType features?

Yes. Hinting, kerning, ligatures, and other OpenType tables are preserved. Subsetting only removes unused glyphs, not the shaping rules for the ones you keep.
