What people use it for
- Password-protect a private video or photo before uploading it to Dropbox, Google Drive, or iCloud.
- Send a scan of your passport, ID, or driver's license to a landlord or bank without exposing it in plain email.
- Lock a spreadsheet of payroll or client data before sharing it with a colleague over Slack or WhatsApp.
- Encrypt a backup archive (ZIP, 7z, tar.gz) before storing it on an external drive or a USB stick.
- Protect personal journals, source code, or draft documents before syncing them across devices.
- Share a sensitive audio recording or interview file with a lawyer or journalist through untrusted channels.
This is a free file password protector that lets you add a password to any file — photo, video, document, spreadsheet, archive, anything — right in your browser. Drop the file, choose a password, and download an encrypted .mtenc copy that can only be opened by coming back here and typing the same password. No upload, no signup, no email.
If you have been searching for how to password-protect a video, encrypt a photo, lock a folder of documents, or put a password on a file, this covers it. Encryption uses AES-256-GCM with a key stretched from your password via PBKDF2 — the same primitives modern password managers and disk encryption use. Every file is encrypted with a fresh random salt and IV, so encrypting the same input twice produces two completely different outputs.
Because everything runs on your device with the browser's Web Crypto API, sensitive files — private videos, personal photos, tax documents, IDs, medical records, source code, financial spreadsheets — never leave your computer, and neither does the password. This is a safer choice than the typical "encrypt file online" service that quietly ships your file and password to a third-party server. The original filename and file type are also encrypted inside the container, so an encrypted .mtenc file leaks nothing about what it holds — not even whether it was a video or a PDF.
How it works
- 1
Drop any file
Drag a photo, video, document, or archive into the box above, or click to browse. Nothing is uploaded.
- 2
Choose a password
Pick a strong password. We stretch it with PBKDF2 and use AES-256-GCM to encrypt the file locally in your browser.
- 3
Download the .mtenc file
Save the encrypted copy anywhere — cloud storage, USB, email. To open it later, come back to this page, switch to "Remove password", drop the .mtenc, and enter your password.
